Kawai Moonsault with gigbag

We've previously looked at the Kawai Moonsault on this blog (see here), but I think it's well worth another look because it's one of my all-time favourite designs and is one that is rarely seen outside of Japan. This particular blue-burst example is available for sale on eBay right now, priced at $3995, so as much as I love this design I'm not going to be buying one any time soon.

Furthermore, I had to show you the above photo, because it's rare enough to see a Moonsault itself, let alone its oddly-shaped gigbag. I bet you'd get a few stares carrying one of those.

Montana Custom Leathercaster

Have you noticed that if there was ever one type of guitar that is consistently chosen for the covered-in-leather treatment - be it partially or whole-body - then it's the Tele? It must be something to do with the country and western association that this particular guitar has.

This alder-bodied Montana Leathercaster T-type guitar not only has a hand-tooled leather pickguard, but it also features a skull and crossbones and a liberal dose of nickel skull studs and a pair of skull-topped control knobs, and as such will appeal not only to the C&W crowd but also to the type of people that like lots of skull emblems all over the place.

A vintage Kent-brand solidbody electric

Here are two snapshots of my old Kent guitar.

I acquired this circa 1995 at a ramshackle roadside shop in rural Georgia (USA), whose sign advertised "APPLIANCES - GUITARS". The place was full of beat-up used stoves and refrigerators, but there was only one guitar for sale, this Kent, which I purchased for fifty dollars, not a low price, but I couldn't bargain him down.

Note the stylized V and T on the volume and tone knobs. The movable plastic bridge is held in place by string tension, like that of an archtop guitar. The wear pattern on the aluminum pickguard indicates that someone played it a lot. It's basically a toy, but its amplified tone is clear and twangy.

Kent was a US-brandname for guitars imported in from Japan and Korea in the 1960s. Most were produced by Teisco and Guyatone, although later on the Kent name started appearing on Swedish-made Hagstrom guitars produced for the US market.

Upgraded 1983 Gibson Challenger II + I

A short-lived budget LP-shaped guitar from the early 80s, the Gibson Challenger II (there is a Challenger I with only the bridge pickup) has a bolt-on neck, a Schaller wrap-around bridge and supposedly cheap noisy humbuckers (but it feels like a mere rumor because I never found this information first-hand). The standard silver finish is very 80s (like the electric blue one I pointed out here).

Anyway, this one has been upgraded with 3 new chrome Gibson humbuckers and a Marauder pickguard - and the result looks quite good. I like these cheap flat Les Paul variations that Gibson released at some point - much more than the recent luxury Dark Fire or Dusk Tiger targeted at bankers or TV guitarists.

Guild X79 with scary 80s paintjob

I'm always looking for guitars to feature on the blog and stumbled upon this shocking though captivating Guild X79 with the oddest 80's paintjob. I think it belongs to your blog.

The X79 is an all mahogany guitar and neck with a rosewood fingerboard and 24 frets. The shape is out of nowhere, like if 4 people had decided to pull the body of an SG or a Guild S300 in different directions. As I said, the paint job, with its blue and white lines and curves is so 80's that this guitar belongs to a modern art musem (I wouldn't be surprised if Zakk Wylde put a bid on this one). And as any good 80's shredding board, the Floyd Rose tremolo is de rigueur.

Ah yes, the dreaded Music Outlet Shop of Cologne. You can usually halve the prices that they give on eBay to get a better idea of a guitar's true value. However, nice find!

Francesco Molino

Francesco Molino ( 1768 - 1847) lahir di Ivrea dekat Turin - Italia, adalah seorang Komposer & Gitaris yang diusia yang terbilang muda sudah melakukan konser di Spanyol. Pada mulanya dia adalah pemain biola pada beberapa orkestra di Turin. Tahun 1820 ia memutuskan untuk hijrah ke Paris untuk mengembangkan karier hingga akhir hayatnya. Karya-karyanya banyak terlupakan oleh orang hingga abad 20 ini seperti 3 Sonata & 18 Prelude. Ia juga pernah menerbitkan buku metode gitar di tahun 1817. Beberapa hasil karya Molino yang masih dimainkan oleh Gitaris hingga saat ini antara lain: Romance, Sonata, Nocturne, Theme & Varitions dll. Selain menulis Solo Gitar, dia juga menulis untuk Duet Biola, Flute, Gitar, Quartet dan Concento.
