Boutique semi-hollow guitars - you'll have to look to know more...

guitarz.blogspot.com

For sure you won't see these guitars everyday! Only two of them were ever built, and handmade semi-hollow guitars with an experimental design are quite uncommon, because another level of skills is required than when you make up a solid body...

And the result is - IMHO - quite stunning! The shape is brilliant, the thick contoured horns are quite a smart move (people busy with guitar design will understand what I mean) and I love the big German carve! I appreciate the fact that they look timeless and could have been made at any moment of the history of electric guitars (and they would have bizarre all along) - at least in Germany where there is a tradition of highly creative jazz guitars!

I imagine that people who will look at these strange instruments with the image of a ES-335 in the head will find hard to love them, so please forget everything and really look without any preconception - and enjoy!

Jonas Hellborg feat. Shawn Lane - Icon

Artist: Jonas Hellborg feat. Shawn Lane
Album:  Icons
Year: 2002
Genre:  Jazz, Ethno Jazz, Fusion
Format: 256 kbps mp3
Tracklist:
1. Anchor - 15:02
2. Mirror - 23:20
3. Vehicle - 16:10
4. Escape - 4:46

Jonas Hellborg is a bass guitarist with the omnivorous ears of a Don Cherry and the once-in-a-generation instrumental technique of a John McLaughlin. He is also thankfully something of an anarchist. The approach to his own instrument and choice of collaborators has seen him build a body of work consistently rewarding, sophisticated and almost entirely above genre."Icon" continues an exploration of South Indian musical tradition. This began in earnest with Hellborg's previous collaborations with the sons of the legendary ghatam (clay pot) player "Vikku" Vinayakram (famous for his work with Shakti) and the extraordinary guitarist Shawn Lane. All appear here.Instrumental virtuosity, a practically telepathic communication between the five musicians and unorthodox composition from Hellborg and V. Selvaganesh are the order of the day. This is obvious within the first bars of "Anchor", where Hellborg coaxes microtones out of a slapped fretless acoustic bass guitar over a drone.Umamahesh's vocal proves a rhythmic counterpoint, while Shawn Lane's guitar floats over the high registers with an almost violin-like quality. Lane's shift to rhythmic chords is the cue for Selvaganesh and Umashankar on kanjeera and ghatam to drive the tune forward with stupidly fast feats of percussion. And Hellborg's solo is, well impossible.Distorted guitar, passages of rhythmic unison and a solo with a curiously vocal quality from Hellborg distinguish "Mirror".A structurally complicated piece,it hits a series of breakdowns and rhythmic swells at the nine minute mark. "Vehicle" by contrast sees deliberate, simple arpeggios and chords from Hellborg's almost lute-like bass guitar give way to beautiful runs from register to register.Lane's fluid guitar then takes on a tone something like a sarangi and the Vinayakram brothers exchange rhythms of splendid complexity. This release isa masterclass in cross-cultural collaboration. Not so much the meeting of two different traditions as the invention of a new one. Superb.

Marma hollow body guitar

guitarz.blogspot.com

Another brand about which I have very little to tell (in these times of vintage worship, I wish someone would seriously write the ultimate book about unknown electric guitars), this time from East-germany. This Marma is not as exuberant as the guitars from West-Germany of the time, but it's very elegant with its classic shape, curved pickguard, sound holes, control plate and tail, and its long tremolo arm.

Marma produced also solid bodies, banjos and some guitar devices that I will present soon here (and all information about Marma is welcome).

But, being familiar with these songs makes it all the more impressive to here Shawn & company pull them off. Shawn,s passing away a few years ago was devastating as a fan, but this exceptional performance has been captured for all of us who never saw a Shawn Lane show to enjoy for ever. It's amazing!

When drummer Tony Williams died of a heart attack on February 23, 1997, at the relatively young age of 51, it was a tremendous loss for straight-ahead post-bop and hard bop as well as for fusion. Williams had numerous acoustic jazz credentials (including his contributions to Miles Davis' legendary mid-‘60s quartet), and his band Lifetime was one of the most important fusion outfits of the ‘70s. The late drummer's fusion side is what electric guitarist Allan Holdsworth, electric bassist Jimmy Haslip (of Yellowjackets fame), keyboardist Alan Pasqua and drummer Chad Wackerman pay tribute to on Blues for Tony, an excellent two-CD set that was recorded live in 2007. Forming a quartet, the improvisers remember Williams not by trying to sound like a carbon copy of Lifetime, but rather, by celebrating the overall spirit of Williams' fusion output. Holdsworth, in fact, worked with Williams when he replaced John McLaughlin as Lifetime's guitarist in 1975; it was a brief association (Holdsworth left Lifetime the following year), although certainly a noteworthy one. And like Lifetime, this quartet (which performs mostly material by Holdsworth and Pasqua) demonstrates that being influenced by rock and funk and making extensive use of electric instruments doesn't mean that a group cannot maintain a jazz mentality. In fact, Blues for Tony thrives on a jazz mentality. Improvisation and spontaneity prevail, and even though Blues for Tony is by no means straight-ahead acoustic jazz, the quartet's amplified performances can easily be described as "the sound of surprise" (to borrow a term coined by the late jazz critic Whitney Balliett). These performances underscore the fact that--contrary to what myopic jazz purists and bop snobs would have us believe--fusion is not pseudo-jazz. Fusion is authentic jazz, but it's authentic jazz for people who also appreciate rock and funk. Blues for Tony is an album that fusion lovers shouldn't miss.
